What is BBFC

The Bindubasini Football Championship (BBFC) stands as one of the most prestigious school football tournaments in Bangladesh. Organized by the students and alumni of Bindubasini Govt. Boys’ High School, Tangail, it brings together current and former students across generations. Since its inception in 2016 by the SSC Batch of 2008, BBFC has evolved into a national spectacle—celebrated for its vibrant atmosphere, spirited competition, and cultural significance in the landscape of school football.

Origins and Evolution

BBFC was born from a simple conversation in 2016 among members of the 2008 SSC batch, who envisioned a tournament where all SSC batches of the school could participate. That vision quickly turned into a milestone initiative.

Held annually during the three days following Eid-Ul-Adha, the tournament has become a tradition. Each year, a different alumni batch takes responsibility for organizing the event. Over time, the championship has grown in scale and popularity, drawing participation from all SSC batches and igniting widespread excitement throughout the school community. The tournament emphasizes unity and brotherhood, encouraging maximum participation.

Tournament Format

Qualification

Every registered SSC batch of Bindubasini Govt. Boys’ High School is eligible to participate. Each year, the newly graduated SSC batch joins the competition.

Group Stage

Teams are divided into 8 groups, each consisting of 3 to 4 teams. Round-robin matches are played within each group. The top 2 teams from each group advance to the next round.

Round of 16

The top 2 teams from each group compete in knockout matches based on a cross-group matching system. Winners proceed to the quarter-finals.

Quarter-Finals

8 teams face off in four intense matches. The winners move on to the semi-finals.

Semi-Finals

The four semi-finalists compete for a spot in the final. The two winners advance to the championship match.

Final

Held at Tangail Stadium, the final is the most anticipated event of the tournament. The two remaining teams battle for the coveted BBFC trophy.

Plate Championship

There is an additional tournament beside the main tournament which is designed specifically for senior batches. Senior teams from the SSC 2008 batch and earlier are eligible to participate. 4 teams are selected from those eliminated in the group round of the main tournament. Then two semi-final matches are played between the 4 selected teams. The Winners of the semi-finals compete in the final match. And finally, the winning team of the final is awarded the title of ‘Plate Champion.’

The Craze of the Tournament

The BBFC is more than just a football competition—it's a celebration of community, identity, and tradition. Each year, excitement builds as Bindubasinians, both past and present, return to Tangail to celebrate Eid-ul-Azha and attend the tournament. The excitements of the tournaments are as follows:

Grand Rally: The tournament kicks off with a festive rally through Tangail city.

Opening Ceremony: A vibrant ceremony marks the official start of the championship.

Jersey Reveal: Each batch unveils its team jersey in a stylish ramp walk event.

Pre-Tournament Preparations: Teams are often seen practicing on local fields, gearing up for the big event.

City-Wide Celebration: Tangail transforms with colorful jerseys and a football fever that engages not only students but the entire city.

Why BBFC Matters

1. Showcases football talent among current students and former students

2. Strengthens school spirit and alumni relationships

3. Celebrates tradition, unity, and healthy competition

BBFC has transcended the boundaries of a school-level event to become a city-wide festival that resonates across Bangladesh, celebrating sport, unity, and tradition. The Bindubasini Football Championship (BBFC) is more than just a tournament—it is a legacy of unity, sportsmanship, and school pride. Since its humble beginnings in 2016, BBFC has evolved into a symbol of community spirit, bringing together generations of students in a celebration that extends far beyond the football field. With its inclusive format, vibrant traditions, and passionate participation, BBFC not only strengthens the bond among alumni and current students of Bindubasini Govt. Boys’ High School but also brings the city of Tangail to life with energy and excitement.
